Nail Art on the Wild Side

This is not related to Easter or spring, but I wanted to show you some of my handpainted stuff. It’s just me, nail polish, and the tiniest paintbrush I can find. I use double-sided foam tape to stick the nails onto a Plexiglass board and then I use the board as a pallette to mix up the colors I need. I use only nail polish, no paint.  This medium and setup works for me, but unless you can assemble a color wheel in your head backwards and forwards, you may find that acrylic paint works better. Nail polish dries really, really fast on a pallette- you have seconds to work it before it gets a skin on it and gets all clumpy. So unless you can mix the color you like on the first try every time, I would recommend starting with acrylic paint.

I made this set as a custom order a while back. The Mystery Animal you see on the extreme left is actually a meerkat. Don’t laugh! Well, OK, you can laugh. They’re funny looking little buggers- mine looks like a stuffed animal. Luckily, the client was really nice and had enough of a sense of humor to appreciate him.

I knew all those years of doodling would pay off someday! If you’re artistically inclined, give miniature painting a try. You’ll either be hooked and love it, as I did, or you’ll have a violent swearing fit and hurl your paints across the room. It only seems to go one of those two ways.

I’m thinking I’m going to have to change the name of the blog to “NeverTooMuchQuirkyNailArt” as that seems to be most of what I’ve been doing lately, but painting these little detailed things is keeping my mind off all the stuff that’s happening here in Japan. Extra dose of art therapy!

About nevertoomuchglitter

Nail artist. Wanderer. I'm a color-holic, in fact, it was my love of color that brought me to the nail art world. Well, that, and the fact I was too cheap to pay crazy Japanese prices for nail polish while living in Tokyo, so I had to start mixing my own. That's how NTMG began.

This is soooooo cute! I love how intricate the drawings are.. can’t believe you hand painted this! They look amazing.. my favorites are the humpback whale and the polar bear!

I would never have the patience or talent to spend hours drawing in nail tips. I wonder what your client did with these nails.. do you think he purchased them for himself??

    • nevertoomuchglitter says:

Thanks Libby- I’m so glad you liked them. The client wanted some endangered species nails-not sure if they were getting worn as they were pretty long (almost 1 inch!) but they were fun to make.

  2. Those are absolutely gorgeous. And I congratulate myself for being able to do my nails and not need to clean up stray brushstrokes most of the time. Sheesh.

Glad you liked them! I acutally find it’s much easier to paint on nails other than my own. I can paint a tiny tiger but I regularly slop polish on my cuticles too. That’s why I cheat and put a little Vaseline around them before I paint with a dark color.

Your skill is too awesome to be confined to a blog, you need a gallery exhibit!

Thank you! I hope to get one someday. My work’s been featured here in Japan but I want to get it out to a wider audience. 🙂

  4. Rabbit says:

Great job. Thats right what you said. You love making it or hate it:)))
    Very beautiful this animals.

  5. Lucy says:

Your a fantastic artist! The tiger is my favorite. Your meerkat is adorable. I would never have the patience for that. I don’t have the talent but I sure can admire it.

    • nevertoomuchglitter says:

Thanks Lucy- the meerkat is my favorite too. They just have so much personality. I didn’t mean for him to look so cartoonish but I think I was projecting some human qualities onto him while I was painting. 🙂

  6. Danni says:

I adore those nails! The details are incredible! Have you ever considered doing mini portraits? I bet you would be really good at that too!

    • nevertoomuchglitter says:

Thanks Danni! I do tiny portraits too but dang, they are A LOT of work and hard to get right. But when they come out right, it’s a great feeling.

  7. Kaybee says:

Wow, I love the shading and they have very expressive eyes! The water is all pretty and sparkly on the whale. The meercat is saying “Hakuna Matata,” about looking like a stuffed animal. I just got finished fixing a piece of wall art with nail polish lol. It does dry fast, which is kind of good in a lot of ways. I love these nails, and I think they look pretty awesome enlarged. Can you paint this well large? What a great talent! Hmmm. Maybe painting them really large could get rid of all your OPI and Essie lol!!!

    • nevertoomuchglitter says:

Kaybee, you’re a genius! Maybe I should start doing full-sized paintings in nail polish. It couldn’t be any worse than some of the modern art I’ve seen in NYC.
It’s much easier to paint on a larger canvas, at least for me! I haven’t done any full-sized work in a while but I plan on starting again once I get a place that’s larger than a shoebox. 🙂

You are artist. Are you drawing paintings either?

    • nevertoomuchglitter says:

Hi there! Yes, I am also doing regular sketches and paintings, though not very big ones becuase my apartment is very small. I also do a lot of photography.

  9. Almudena says:

Wow wow wow… they are really gorgeous!
    you are an artist :-)!

  10. Mary says:

Wow, I am very impressed by how talented you are! Even to paint all that on a large canvas amazes me, but when you can do that on such a small nail – incredible!

Thanks for sharing this with us! 🙂

    • nevertoomuchglitter says:

Thank you very much, Mary! I’m so glad you liked them. 🙂 I’ll be doing some more teeny art nails soon- I’ve been thinking about Salvadore Dali recently but I can’t seem to get it quite right.

Found your blog yesterday and I am OBSESSED! I’ve currently got one tab open browsing your blog, and one browsing your Etsy shop… it’s all you, all the time. (did that sound creepy? LOL… :p)

Anyways, I wanted to say I ADORE this set! Incredible detail and eye for colour… and for the record I knew he was a meerkat right away and I think he’s adorable!!

(ps….. all your posts about the earthquake and subsequent events were riveting, I read through them all. I’m glad you are ok after all of that, and thank you for writing about it – having an insider’s view free of media bias is invaluable for knowing the truth of any situation. And I agree…. no one should watch Fox news for any reason whatsoever, ever……. ever.)

    ❤ Kayleigh

Awww, thanks Kayleigh! I appreciate it and I’m glad to provide some entertainment for you!
You must have pretty sharp eyes if you noticed he was a meerkat- thanks! 😀 They do look sort of cartoony anyway but I love them. Things have settled down in Japan for now but there is still radiation leakage. Most of the world’s news media has moved on, but things are not over yet. But things in Tokyo are operating mostly as normal.

Thanks again for your kind words and stop by anytime!

  12. Stacci Reid says:

I STILL wear these nails. hehe I love them. Thank you!

    • nevertoomuchglitter says:

Aw, thanks for letting me know! It was a blast working with you and thanks for your patience through the process! 😀
